Termites are small, white, tan, or black insects that can cause severe destruction to wooden structures. Termites belong to the insect order Isoptera, an ancient insect group that dates back more than 100 million years. The Latin name Isoptera means “equal wing” and refers to the fact that the front set of wings on a termite is similar in size and shape to hind set.
Drywood termites infest not only dry wood but also wood in good condition, including structural lumber, orchard trees, utility poles, lumber in storage, limbs of native trees, etc. From these areas, winged termites migrate to nearby buildings and other structures. Termites are sometimes mistaken for carpenter ants; However, they are in a different insect group. The first noticeable difference in comparison are the wings.
Bed bugs are small, brownish, flattened insects that feed solely on the blood of animals. Although the common bed bug prefers feeding on humans, it will also bite other warm-blooded animals, including dogs, cats, birds, and rodents. Sometimes, bed bugs are mistaken for household insects such as, carpet beetles, ticks, fleas, or even cockroaches. Bed bugs do not jump or fly, but they quickly crawl over floors, walls, couches, chairs, curtains, ceilings, and other surfaces.
Adult females lay 1 to 5 eggs per day. The eggs are tiny, whitish, sticky (causing them to adhere to surfaces), and hard to see without magnification, especially on light-colored surfaces. Bed bugs eggs hatch in about a week at room temperatures.
These beetles are small insects that reduce wood to a flour-like powder. Adults mate and lay eggs on or under the wood, and larval development takes place entirely below the wood surface. The eggs hatch into small wood-boring larvae, emerging as adults one to five years later. Customers can discover the powder and small holes where adult beetles have chewed the wood. It is more likely to see the damage, rather than beetles themselves, as they are active primarily at night.
